About the Markham Arts Council
The mission of the Markham Arts Council is to serve the community by providing art and cultural education, support the development of visual, literary and performing arts and culture and to enhance the community’s well being.
The Markham Arts Council was formed in 2004. It currently has a membership of more than 250 individuals and organizations. There are a number of working committees that are headed up by members of the Board of Directors. Committees include other members of the Markham Arts Council:

Milestones and Accomplishments:
- Received two Trillium grants
- Publish a quarterly newsletter Arts in Motion
- Publish an annual Arts Directory that features all members of the Arts Council
- Administer three Art Shows each year including the Markham Village Art Show & Sale and the Mayor’s Art Showcase
- Received Charitable Status in March 2008
- Hold several seminars each year
- Hold an annual Photo Contest
- Attend festivals and events throughout the summer months
- Arts’n Tea Series held at the Varley Art Gallery
- Hold regular Arts Mixers at member venues
- Helped to start the Markham Teen Arts Council
- Work with the Town of Markham and York Region on Cultural Mapping
- Planning a Poetry Contest in the spring of 2009
- The Markham Arts Council has established itself as the leading Arts Council in York Region
